Summary & Analysis

The amendments proposed in this bill are in 2 parts: part one, which consists of sections 226(2), 227, 230, 329A, 340 and 362, seeks to amend the principal act to provide a stiffer penalty for offences under the act. The Criminal Code Act is an old law enacted in 1916 and as such, most of the penalties prescribed to offenders are not in tandem with the current social and economic realities. While the second amendment – section 327 – seeks to
Provide for a more rational punishment for the offence of attempted suicide.

The punishment proposed by the second amendment will be curative and not punitive, thereby making it possible for victims to be able to reintegrate into society.

Help keep Legis360 free and independent

Legis360 makes Nigeria's legislature legible: every bill, motion and vote, in plain language, with no paywall.

Your support helps us:

  • Hold power to account. We put on record what the 10th Assembly is doing, so citizens know the public is watching.
  • Keep it free and open. No paywalls, because everyone deserves clear, unbiased information about decisions made on their behalf.
  • Keep building. Proceedings, scorecards, alerts and the Ilimi assistant all cost money to run and to improve.

We don't want to wait for a more transparent democracy to be handed to us. We want to build it now, with you.
