Ogun State needs a transparent, simple, and easy-to-use mechanism that will enable the citizenry to understand and follow their public budgets and projects. The budget for the year 2026 contains huge allocations made to infrastructure, health, education, rural development, environment, and housing, but the budgetary documents may be too difficult for ordinary citizens to decode. It is, therefore, recommended that the Ogun State Government, in conjunction with the Ogun State Assembly, civil society organisations, and the communities, develop an open budget and project delivery tracker.
The proposal would entail the following:
- Publication of approved allocations,
- Quarterly releases,
- Project location,
- Contractor and contract amount,
- Project schedule and status, etc.
The languages used should be easily accessible. The citizens should also have an interactive platform with which they will be able to leave feedback and information in respect to delayed or abandoned projects. The media, especially radio and web-based platforms, should be used effectively to disseminate relevant information to those who will otherwise not have access to information using the internet.
This policy will promote transparency and accountability, as it would provide citizens with mechanisms through which they could engage with the government. The government could also use it as an avenue to discover challenges in project execution which had existed before and create awareness regarding issues that arise from budgets to actual results.
