Oyo State already has a good law (the Child Rights Law 2006) that says no one under 18 can get married. Any marriage with a person under 18 is illegal and not valid. The problem is that many girls and parents still do not know about this law or how to report it when it happens.

It is important that the Oyo State Government, through the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Women Affairs, start a compulsory programme in all secondary schools. Students should learn about the Maputo Protocol, the Child Rights Law, the rule that marriage must be at 18 or older, the need for free and full consent, and the rights of girls. Teachers and Guidance Counsellors should be trained so they can teach these lessons well and help students who report problems. Schools and local governments should also create simple and private ways for people to report child marriage or forced betrothal. At the same time, the government should work with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community groups so the message reaches villages and rural areas.

This kind of approach has already worked in several European countries. Sweden was the first country in the world to make lessons about relationships, consent, and rights compulsory in all schools (starting in 1955). It still teaches these topics today and keeps the marriage age strictly at 18 with no exceptions. The Netherlands teaches about respect, consent, healthy relationships, and personal boundaries from a very young age.

These lessons are mandatory and have helped create better attitudes among young people. The country also keeps the marriage age at 18 with no exceptions. Germany made marriage under 18 completely illegal in 2017 (no exceptions) and continues to use school education and support services to protect young people. Sweden led the way with school education on these issues many decades ago. Other countries later followed with similar programs and stronger laws.

Several African countries are already doing similar work and have shown that combining school education, community efforts, and strong laws can reduce child marriage. Ethiopia has made clear progress, with the rate of child marriage dropping from 40 percent in 2016 to 32 percent in 2025. The government works with communities, trains teachers, supports school clubs, keeps girls in school, and involves religious and traditional leaders.

Programmes that combine school support with community conversations have been especially successful. Rwanda linked free education policies with big reductions in child marriage by helping more girls stay in school longer. Kenya and Ghana run school-based awareness and life-skills programmes, work with communities, and promote zero tolerance for child marriage while supporting girls’ education. Malawi has a strong example of traditional leaders working with the law to cancel child marriages and protect girls.

These African examples show that when governments combine clear laws, school teaching about rights and consent, teacher training, easy reporting systems, and real partnership with community and traditional leaders, child marriage can be reduced and girls can stay in school longer.

If Oyo State adopts the same practical approach, it will protect more girls, help them finish school, and fully put into practice both the Child Rights Law and the Maputo Protocol.

To effectively address child marriage, schools, parents, community leaders, and government agencies must work together to educate girls and raise awareness about the dangers of early marriage. Every girl deserves the opportunity to complete her education, achieve her dreams, and contribute meaningfully to society. Empowering girls with knowledge of their rights is a vital step towards ending child marriage and building a safer, brighter future for Oyo State.

This is a commendable and timely initiative that could make a real difference in protecting girls across Oyo State. Educating them about their rights in schools while engaging local communities is a powerful step toward lasting change. I strongly support this initiative and urge the government to give it the attention and commitment it deserves.

Every child has the right to be educated not been forced to marriage, let all say no to child marriage

OluwaseyiOct 16, 2026

This is very necessary in our time and age. There's been so much law enacted for the girl child in recent years, and this will really improve them. More educated children=less mortality rate.

ImmanuelOct 16, 2026

Beautiful Idea, very thoughtful!

DorcasOct 16, 2026

IsraelOct 16, 2026

Protecting girls starts with education, awareness, and strict enforcement of the law. Every child deserves a future, not forced marriage.

ProsperOct 16, 2026

Nothing beats a girl knowing her own right from a very young age

FelixOct 16, 2026

This is a good one.
Kudos to you, Deborah for putting this together to create a bold stand about the right of our girls and make sure early marriage is a thing if the past in our society. We must arm the girl child with enough awareness, education, and knowledge about her right. The government should give this the right ear to make our society a safe place for the girl child.
God bless you, Deborah.
Keep making waves.

samuelOct 16, 2026

This is a very important and thoughtful write-up. Having laws in place is one thing, but ensuring that people are aware of them and that they are properly enforced is what truly makes the difference. Protecting young girls requires collective effort from the government, schools, families, and communities.

JosephOct 16, 2026

I hope this will spread well. A lot of people need to educate themselves concerning this. Thank you.

FavourOct 16, 2026

Very thoughtful.

IfeoluwaOct 16, 2026

Laws alone cannot protect our girls without proper enforcement. The Oyo State Government must act now by making child-rights education compulsory in schools and strengthening reporting systems. Let us turn laws into action and protect every girl's right to education, freedom, and a future beyond child marriage!

BoluwatifeOct 16, 2026

This is good agenda. I really wish this is implemented

I believe there should be a program for these young girls apart from school lectures.

BabalolaOct 17, 2026

This is a great initiative. The silly old men actively dabbling into child marriages should be ashamed of themselves

AdetolaOct 17, 2026

Real change requires collective action.
Thanks for speaking about this, Deborah. Hopefully, it gets to the right ears.

OmobosolaOct 17, 2026

Actually, this is the first time I will see such initiative geared towards the girl child.

oluwaseunOct 17, 2026

Very powerful
Well bro keep the good work

HalimahOct 17, 2026

Amazing work Deborah! My CDS had a sensitization on this topic yesterday in commemoration of the International day of the girl child. The change needs to start at the grassroot, real change won't happen when the victims aren't even aware of their rights, or the law.

ChristianahOct 17, 2026

This is really nice
An amazing idea that needs to be implemented and appreciated

WarisOct 17, 2026

This is a powerful, timely, and commendable call to action. Protecting the girl child requires more than having laws on paper; it requires deliberate implementation, public awareness, community involvement, and a strong commitment to ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to learn, grow, and fulfil her potential.

Education is one of the most effective tools for breaking the cycle of child marriage, while collaboration between government, schools, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and families can turn these recommendations into lasting change.

Our girls deserve protection, not premature responsibilities; opportunities, not limitations; and a future shaped by their dreams, not forced decisions. I sincerely hope the Oyo State Government takes this recommendation seriously and translates it into concrete action. The future of our girls is the future of our society. 👏🏽❤️
